Today’s reading: James 1:9-11
We live in a material world. Almost everywhere you look, there are online ads, television commercials and radio spots bombarding us with the message that we need and deserve more. And our “smart technology” is only compounding this situation. So as I read James 1:9-11 this morning, it felt like a little breath of fresh air that provided some needed perspective.
“Let the lowly brother boast in his exaltation, and the rich in his humiliation, because like a flower of the grass he will pass away. For the sun rises with its scorching heat and withers the grass; its flower falls, and its beauty perishes. So also will the rich man fade away in the midst of his pursuits” (vs. 9-11).
“Thank You, God, for this small but needed reminder that pursuing anything but You is ultimately a wasted and useless effort. Help us, God, to resist the commercial pull surrounding us and instead focus our attention on following and highlighting You.”
What helps you keep a proper perspective as you navigate life in this commercially-crazed world? How might you explain to someone the folly of pursuing riches and material things? What’s one thing you can do to help others see how pursuing God is what brings true and lasting joy? Tami
